Kirkuk
and its dependencies: Historically part of Kurdistan
The most sensitive
issue in Iraq these days is focused on Kirkuk. The heated debate on
federalism in Iraq is no better exemplified than in Kirkuk. Despite the
oil riches that lie beneath ground, Kirkuk appears forlorn and
neglected.

Turkish PM does not accept Kurdish as a mother tongue
During the meeting with PM Erdogan, Sezgin Tanrikulu, the chairperson of
the Bar Association in Amed (Diyarbakir), told him that the problem is
not only economic, it has also political and cultural aspects. On that,
Erdogan wanted Tanrikulu to give an example. Tanrikulu said that there
is no right of using mother tongue in the educational and official use
in Turkey. Erdoagn replied, “Education in mother tongue is only for
minorities and courses are opened for them.” Tanrikulu reminded the PM
Erdogan the example of Turks in Germany.

person in my circle reached the stage of making independent choices. In

imagine anybody wanting to depend on others for life choices for ever. A
cynical friend asked why people should seek independence, if depending
on others makes life easier.

Exploring Kurdistan
newspaper, decades later
Kurdistan the
firstnewspaperpublished by Kurds, began publication in 1898. As Martin
vanBruinessen put it, “Significantly, it was not in Kurdistan or even
Istanbul, the political and cultural center of the Ottoman Empire, that
the firstissues were printed, but in Cairo, which was out of reach of
the sultan’s censorship and where a number of opposition journals were
also published. ”Perhaps due to this uniqueness, in effect, being the
firstK urdish journal, it has been commonly but erroneously accepted as
the beginning of the discursive Kurdish nationalism.
